After a successful series of light armoured reconnaissance and liaison vehicles, the Ferret Scout Car was widely used by the British Army and Commonwealth from the 1950s onwards. Later variants of the Ferret took part in the 1990 Gulf War.
The Ferret, a vehicle type originating in the successful World War II Daimler Dingo reconnaissance car, was designed with stealth in mind, a light and fast armoured vehicle that could investigate enemy positions and report discovered weaknesses to commanders, with its own troops able to benefit from what it found.
With an operational weight of about 4 tonnes, the Ferret was a fully welded construction and fitted with armour that could withstand most small arms fire, but not much heavier, although it was not intended to operate in direct confrontation with heavy enemy armour.
If the vehicle did run into trouble, the Ferret was powered by a reliable 6-cylinder Rolls Royce engine that gave it a top speed of 45 mph, a speed it could also reach in reverse if needed, something that could be very useful if the crew was in a tight position.
